“Good morning, class. Sorry I’m late.”
“Good morning, Sato-sensei,” the chorus of voices melded together as they did every morning, the classroom full of voices seeming to phase together to create one single voice that rang together through the now-silent classroom.
“Well, everyone seems to be full of energy today,” Sato Sunao said happily, flashing his class a sunny smile and adjusting his glasses as he stepped in front of the blackboard. “Because this morning we’re finally going to be presenting the oral reports I’ve given you so long to work on.”
An irritated groan rolled through the room at the sound of his words. Undaunted, Sunao continued to smile. It was a natural talent he possessed; this ability to remain cheerful through the worst of situations. This perpetual cheerfulness, as well as his slim face and feathery blonde hair, made him quite popular among students. Particularly female students. With a confident chuckle, he shook his head. “Alright, if you’re all that unhappy about it, I’ll allow you fifteen extra minutes to work on it, starting now.”
Satisfied, the groans subsided and the students of first year class 2-C quickly turned to their last-minute work with all the concentration of research scientists. At the front of the room, Sunao turned to engage in quiet conversation with the small, eyeless man who had entered the classroom with him. The students with work left hurried fervently, scrambling to put together last minute details, while those who had completed the assignment on time turned to any number of activities to keep themselves occupied. From a row on the left side of the room, Hayashi Emiko leaned between the desks, locks of fuchsia hair tumbling into her eyes.
“Good morning, Naiyuki-kun!” she chirped happily to the boy in the seat beside her, who yelped, his head flying from the desk as he awoke from the stupor he had previously sunken into. As he rubbed locks of violet hair from his face, the girl before him slowly came into focus, beaming brightly at him from across the aisle between the desks.
“Oh… good morning, Emiko-chan,” he replied, trying to bring his consciousness out of his daydreams and back into the blinding florescent light of the classroom. “How are you and Ami-chan this morning?”
“Great! Right, Ami?” Emiko said happily, turning to grin at the eyeless blonde girl who sat in the desk beside her. The blonde nodded, and Emiko leaned over and grasped her hand. As she did this, Ami turned her empty eyes on Naiyuki and smiled. In the place of the blank sockets, there were now a pair of bright, sapphire blue eyes, changing the effect of her appearance from hollow to pretty, a complete transformation in a matter of seconds.
“Yep,” Ami replied in her usual brazen tone, giving Naiyuki a cordial wave with her free hand and flicking a runaway lock of blonde hair from her eye. “Doin’ pretty great. Finished our report last week, so today’s a breeze for us. How about you, then, Naiyuki-kun?”
“Um… I didn’t do a report. Sato-sensei… excused me from the assignment because… you know,” Naiyuki replied slowly, forcing his eyes to stay on the pair of girls rather than drift awkwardly to the desk like they wanted to. He always had to do this… fight the awkward feeling he got when he was faced with the subject of Beloved. It was something that was a routine subject in conversation but something he never really got used to. He really did wonder why the other students humored him.
“Ohhh….” Emiko nodded slightly, suddenly serious for a moment. “So… did you have an alternate assignment in place of it?”
“Um… yeah. I had to write about my family…” finally giving in to temptation and allowing his eyes to stare into the wood of his desk
